The American Guitar Society
This $200 scholarship recognizes the performance abilities of guitar students of any age. Entrants must be currently studying classical guitar with a private instructor, or enrolled in a music school or university, and perform at a designated AGS meeting.
There are three divisions-Junior (under 18 as of 10/1/16), Adult Amateur & Community College Student, and University Student. Each category has a limit of five players. Categories can fill early, and it is advised to apply early. The deadline for filing the Junior Application is September 25, 2016. The deadline for the adult categories is October 25, 2016. Winners will be presented with their awards at the December 3, 2016 AGS meeting. Prior Bickford Award Scholarship winners are not eligible. There is no cost to apply for this award.
All entrants must email a completed application to email@example.com, and schedule a performance time at one of the following AGS meetings: All Youth Division entrants must play at the Saturday, October 1, 2016 meeting, and all adult entrants must play at the Saturday, November 5, 2016 AGS Meeting. You must contact Angie Hougen at (818) 667- 4785 to reserve your space on the competition roster, and Michael Camp at (818) 793-8176, to advise him of your selection(s) for the program. The meetings are held in the Music Building of LA Valley College, 5800 Fulton Avenue, in Valley Glen. They are free, begin at 7:30 PM, and are open to the public. We will not take any walk-in applications at the meetings. No exceptions. Please note-there are a limited number of slots available at each meeting. They will be filled on a first come, first served basis. There is a strong likelihood that the performance slots will be filled before the deadline, so applicants are encouraged to apply early.
For the Junior Division, entrants must perform a selection less than seven minutes in length. Adult Division entrants must perform two pieces of contrasting style, totaling less than 15 minutes. If the piece is an original composition, please include the score. All entrants will receive valuable feedback from the AGS adjudication staff, and a complimentary one year membership to the American Guitar Society, which will allow entrants to participate in the AGS Orchestra, and perform at monthly meetings. Winners will be notified by November 12, 2016. For questions, please contact Angie Hougen at (818) 667-4785.
